John Cena Biography

John Cena is one of the most popular superstars of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). His accomplishments rank among the best wrestlers of all time. Since making his debut on one WWE’s signature program – Smackdown – on June 27, 2002, John Cena has 9 World Title reigns (7 WWE Championships and 2 World Heavyweight Championships), 4 Tag Team Title Reigns (2 World Tag Team Championships with Shawn Michaels and Batista and 2 WWE Tag Team Championships with David Otunga and The Miz), and 3 time WWE United States Championships. He was the 2008 Royal Rumble winner after as a surprise entrant (he was out 3 months recovering from a torn pectoral muscle that was estimated to require 7 -12 months rehabilitation) and he’s a 3 time Slammy Award Winner (2009 and 2010 Superstar of the Year, and 2010 Holy $#&! Move of the Year). John Cena has the 5th longest reign as champion in WWE history behind only Hall of Famers Bruno Sammartino, Hulk Hogan, Bob Backlund, and Pedro Morales. John Cena’s rise to superstardom had its humble beginnings.

John Felix Anthony Cena Jr. was born on April 23, 1977 in West Newbury, Massachusetts. He’s the son of John Sr. and Carol and the second eldest of 5 boys. John attended Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he was a Division III All-American offensive lineman. He earned a degree in Exercise Physiology in 1998. John then pursued a career as a bodybuilder after working as a chauffeur for a limousine company. His decision to pursue bodybuilding prompted his move to California in 2000. While he enjoyed watching WWE growing up, Cena never aspired to be one. But while working for Gold’s Gym in Venice, he engaged in conversation with a wrestler-in-training. That meeting encouraged Cena to enroll in classes at Ultimate Pro Wrestling.

Cena quickly became determined to master his new craft. While at Ultimate Pro Wrestling, Cena (wrestling under the name Prototype) captured the UPW Heavyweight Championship and held that title for nearly a month. The following year, World Wrestling Entertainment signed him to a developmental contract and was assigned to train at Ohio Valley Wrestling. There he earned the OVW Heavyweight Championship and reigned as champ, wrestling as The Prototype and Mr. P, for 3 months and the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship (with Rico Constantino) for 2 months.

Cena made his WWE television debut answering Kurt Angle’s open challenge. Cena wrestled in an awesome matched that featured him kicking out the Angle Slam (Kurt Angle’s signature finisher) and endured the painful Ankle Lock to show the WWE universe that he was the future of WWE. In losing, Cena gained a huge following as a fan favorite and began feuding with Chris Jericho. Cena soon turned heel and began to use the gimmick of a rapper. This gimmick was true to his heart because he is a true hip-hop fan and artist. He began wearing his signature Jean Shorts and “throwback” Jerseys that transformed today’s wrestling attire.

John Cena’s entrance theme is from his debut album “You Can’t See Me” (2005). It shows off his rapping skills that was introduced on WWE programming. Cena was involved in many rap battles inside of the squared circle. John Cena has left his mark on wrestling. Because of his WWE celebrity status, he has been featured in many commercials (most notably is his Gillette endorsement) and guest appearances on Psych. He has also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Fox Sport’s The Best Damn Sports Show Period, ESPN’s Sports Center, MTV’s Punk’d and many other appearances.

John Cena also has feature films on his resume. He has starred in The Marine, 12 Rounds, and Legendary that was produced by WWE Studios. He also has a lead role in the upcoming film “Blood Brothers”. He has been recognized for granting over 200 wishes for the Make-A-Wish-Foundation and received the Chris Greicius Celebrity Award in 2009.

John Cena is a celebrity icon for WWE and one of the most recognizable faces in entertainment but he is also a family man. John Cena was married on July 11, 2009 to his high school sweetheart, the former Ms. Elizabeth Huberdeau. Mrs. Cena’s love and support has help her husband reach heights that he has never dreamed possible.
